I came up to our lakehouse for a few days of rest and a break from the busyness with my husband’s aunt. Our first day was full of food and drinks and fresh air – a winning combination for good spirits!
We started our day at one of my alltime favorite breakfast joints. It’s a little hole in the wall breakfast/lunch place on M-72 in Kalkaska called Shirley’s in the Woods Cafe.
The decor is homey and simple but the food – wow. I’ve never had anything I didn’t like.
They bake their own bread, cookies and pies. My favorite bread is a cranberry walnut which you can get as toast or as French toast. Either one is fabulous.
This trip I ordered a vegetable omelet topped with dill havarti cheese, with a side of crispy hash browns and cranberry walnut toast warmed on the grill. I could only eat about half of it. I left with a full tummy and a box full of food for the next day’s breakfast.
Shirley’s has a second location as well. If you’re ever up here in Northern Michigan you must stop in for a bite. You won’t regret it!
