A tiny duck egg

One of those baby ducks we got back in April is laying already. That’s just over three months old and laying eggs – impressive!

The other day when I went to collect eggs, I saw a smaller egg on the ground tucked in next to a large Pekin egg. Initially I thought a chicken had laid with the duck, which happens all the time. When I picked up the egg, however, I could feel the oiliness of it and I knew right away that it was a new duck laying.

Chicken and duck eggs have distinctly different feeling shells. Our duck eggs are very smooth and slick on the outside.

The egg looks like a mini Pekin egg so we think it’s the one new Pekin laying.  No sign yet of eggs from the Indian Runner or the black ducks.
